Complex Languages

Animals have many different ways to communicate with one another. Some ways that they do this include physical movement, chemical movement, and making sounds.

The Waggle Dance

Honeybees do a dance to communicate with their peers. This dance is a kind of figure-eight dance with an angle relative to the sun. Also, the duration of the dance represents the distance to the food source.

Vocal Sophistication

Vervet monkeys use a very complex series of calls and body language to communicate with each other about nearby predators. They even have different calls for different animals.

Yips and Chirps

Prairie dogs use a large variety of barks, yips, and chirps to communicate with their peers about danger. While danger is one use of their languages, they also use it to mark their territory, greet their friends, jump for joy, and call their children.
